Flow-Induced Vibration of Spheroids: Active Control and Energy Harvesting

Abstract: Flow-induced vibration (FIV) of three-dimensional bluff bodies presents opportunities for renewable energy harvesting, but active control approaches remain largely unexplored. This study investigates the active control of elastically mounted oblate spheroids using feedback-controlled body rotation optimized through Bayesian optimisation. Experiments performed over a range of reduced velocities demonstrate that active control significantly enhances vibration amplitude and power extraction compared with the uncontrolled case. The largest improvements were observed for the higher-aspect-ratio spheroid, where oscillation amplitude increased by 230% and the power coefficient reached 0.22. These results demonstrate the potential of actively controlled oblate spheroids as efficient flow-energy harvesters.
