Abstract: Astrophysical objects often tend to have a stably stratified layer (SSL) lying on top of a convective layer. The dynamics of such a system can have interesting consequences in terms of the nature of the observed magnetic field as well as angular momentum transport. In this talk, I will take three case studies - two pertaining to the gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn and one of a three solar mass star - to illustrate some of these effects. We will see what magnetic field simulations and observations of Jupiter and Saturn tell us about the nature of their stably stratified layers. Lastly, I will show simulations of a massive star where internal gravity waves may lead to angular momentum transport.
